On the occasion of Raul Meel’s 85th birthday, FLASH ART Gallery presents the artist’s graphic works, the homage to his contribution to the development of graphic art in post-war and contemporary Estonian art — both in a local and international context.

In addition to his pioneering role in painting and fire performances, an important part of Raul Meel’s artistic journey was connected to both free and printmaking practices, where he experimented with line, colour, and composition, combining in each artistic gesture his characteristic mathematical precision, figurative thinking, and sense of play. The visual vocabulary discovered and developed by Meel under conditions of artistic unfreedom resonated in a remarkable way both with the plastic language of Western European modernism and the art of the second half of the 20th century, and with the local Estonian nature of his work in form and content.

Due to his distinctive mode of thinking, based on the search for a universal sign and its endless variable reproducibility in drawings, concrete poetry, and silkscreens, Meel created extensive series and conceptual total graphic installations. Many of these brought him international recognition: from 1972 onwards, Meel regularly sent his works to graphic art exhibitions and biennales across Europe, where he received awards and international acclaim, while remaining persona non grata in Soviet Estonia.

The central theme running like a red thread through Meel’s entire oeuvre is freedom — the freedom of Estonia, its nature and people, and the freedom of thought, word, and artistic gesture. The exhibition of Raul Meel’s graphic art at FLASH ART Gallery becomes a kind of self-portrait of the artist, inviting viewers to seek and affirm this freedom, metaphorically embodied in his iconic works: from concrete poetry to the series “Under the Sky,” from “Embrace” to “Windows and Landscapes,” and others.

Within the framework of the exhibition “Vabaduse kutse”, Flash Art Gallery invites everyone to a meeting with Raul Meel.

The artist talk will focus on the graphic series presented in the exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the artist speak about his works and artistic ideas, and to ask their own questions.

Raul Meel is one of the most prominent and internationally recognized Estonian artists. A graphic artist, painter, sculptor, installation and fire-performance artist, as well as a prose writer and poet (concrete, visual, and sound poetry), he played a central role in Estonian graphic art during the 1960s–1980s. He was the only Estonian artist to be a member of the International Club of Prize Winners of the International Print Biennials. His works are held in museum and private collections worldwide.

Art historian, curator, and author of monographs on Estonian art and artists, Mai Levin will address several key creative methods of Raul Meel in her lecture. The focus will be on the beginning of his artistic experiments in the late 1960s, when Meel started using a typewriter as an artistic tool and created the so-called “typewriter drawings” — one of the early forms of visual and concrete poetry in Estonia. The lecture will explore how the artist constructed complex typostructures and rhythmic compositions from individual letters and signs, combining language, image, and thought.

The lecture will also touch upon Meel’s geometric series, his experiments with modular structures, and his freer graphic works, where strict systems meet intuitive gesture. Special attention will be given to later series, including the cycles of recent years that Raul Meel continues to develop today.

Экспрессионизм сосредоточен не на внешнем мире, а на внутреннем состоянии человека. Художники деформируют форму, усиливают линии и используют психологический цвет.

Картина становится выражением эмоций и переживаний. Мы познакомимся с работами Мунка, Шиле и Кирхнера.

Практика: Автопортрет эмоции — работа с искажением и линией.
Результат: Глубокие, эмоциональные работы.
